Build Notes

This was a straightforward build with no real issues to report. The CPU + motherboard + RAM were parts that I had originally purchased on Craigslist a few years back and used to upgrade my cousin’s PC in Dallas. I recently visited with new parts and brought these back. I paired them with the Dell OEM GTX 1060 6GB from the Alienware flip and the free Rosewill PSU I picked up. The case and hard drive were both from recent hauls, and the cooler, fans, ARGB controller, and light strip were all from Amazon.

Sale Notes

I listed this build for $425 on 5/3. I had a few lowballs immediately but a serious buyer messaged me on 5/5 via Facebook Marketplace. He asked about the fan noise level as well as whether it came with activated Windows. After answering to his satisfaction, we made plans to meet. At the meet, I learned that the buyer had built his own PCs in the past but now that he had young children he simply didn’t have time and wanted to buy something pre-built.

I had a bit of a scare when powering on the PC for the demo, since it didn’t immediately boot into Windows. For some reason, the BIOS had been reset. I thought this was kind of weird but I just enabled XMP again and got into Windows. The buyer was satisfied and paid full price.

Unfortunately, about 2 weeks later, I got this message on Facebook:

This was the same BIOS reset that occurred during the demo. I was able to walk the buyer through shorting the CMOS pins and reseating the RAM over Facebook Messenger and he was up running again:

The ordeal wasn’t over yet! After another 2 weeks, I got another message, this time saying the PC randomly turns on and off and that now he wasn’t able to get it to boot:

At this point, it was likely either a power supply or motherboard issue. We made plans for him to drop it off and I would replace any necessary parts.

After taking it back, I reset the CMOS again, replaced the CMOS battery, tested the PSU, and then ran a barrage of stress tests. The PC passed with flying colors and the buyer picked it up:

In the end, the only thing I ended up swapping was that CMOS battery and I haven’t heard from the buyer since 🤞.
